Deputy shoots attack suspect in Bodega Bay
A San Francisco man was in critical condition Friday after he was shot by a deputy while allegedly on a druginduced rampage in Bodega Bay, during which he stabbed a security guard, plowed into pedestrians with a stolen truck and assaulted multiple people, authorities said.
Betai Koffi, 32, was struck at least three times by a Sonoma County deputy’s gunfire in the incident on Thursday and hospitalized with major injuries. He was in critical condition Friday.
Koffi was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one charge of carjacking. Officials said he had consumed
four doses of LSD before the evening’s violent disturbances occurred.
The Sonoma County Sheriff ’s Office described the hours leading up to the shooting in a statement Friday afternoon.
Koffi gathered with five of his friends at a rental home on the 600 block of Swan Drive in Bodega Bay to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, officials said.
At noon on Thursday, Koffi consumed two doses of LSD, authorities said. Roughly three hours later, his friends tried to keep Koffi calm because he had become “delusional,” the friends told detectives. Koffi took two more doses of LSD between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Around 8 p.m., Koffi wanted to leave the rental home and his friends attempted to stop him, witnesses said.
Authorities say he then punched a woman at the house in the chest and side, stabbed a man with a pencil, choked a different man, and punched another man in the face before getting into his rental car. The friends treated their own injuries, officials said.
Koffi crashed the blue Hyundai sedan into a parked vehicle in the rental home driveway while trying to pull onto the street, officials said. He then drove toward one of the victims and crashed the sedan into the home’s garage.
Authorities said Koffi got out of the car, which was lodged in the garage, and ran toward a home down the street, where a security guard confronted him.
“Upon questioning, Koffi picked up a landscape light and stabbed the guard in the chest with the metal stake end and knocked the security guard to the ground,” authorities said in the statement. The guard “was unable to get up.”
The security guard suffered nonlifethreatening injuries.
Koffi got into the security guard’s truck and sped away, driving toward and striking a man and woman walking in the road, authorities said. The woman suffered “significant,” nonlifethreatening injuries and the man was hit on the arm but not seriously injured.
Authorities said Koffi left that scene and drove the security truck at another man and woman who were walking on a nearby bluff. The woman also suffered significant, nonlifethreatening injuries.
Koffi again fled and continued driving. He veered the vehicle off the road, hit a wall and drove into the yard of a home before pulling onto Pelican Loop Road.
Authorities received reports of a man assaulting people near Swan and Heron drives and sent help to the neighborhood, where a sheriff ’s deputy and a California Highway Patrol officer parked their vehicles in the street. Officials said Koffi aimed the security truck toward the patrol vehicles — plus a deputy who was standing nearby — and accelerated. The truck crashed into the CHP vehicle.
The deputy, whose name has not been released, fired “several rounds” at Koffi, but officials said the suspect continued accelerating, prompting the deputy to fire additional rounds. It’s unclear how many rounds were fired.
Koffi was shot at least three times and arrested at the scene. officials said. The deputy performed medical aid on Koffi until paramedics arrived. A helicopter took Koffi to a nearby hospital.
Officials with the Santa Rosa Police Department and the Sonoma County district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting, per countywide protocol, sheriff ’s officials said.
