Long shot Haley wins rainshortened race

-

Justin Haley, a long shot making just his third career Cup start, won the rainshortened Cup Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, his first at NASCAR’s top level.

Haley took the lead under caution — Kurt Busch surrendered the top spot when he pitted for tires — and was declared the winner after heavy rain followed two lightning delays. There were 33 laps remaining when the 160lap race was halted.

Haley was 27th when leader Austin Dillon triggered a 17car crash that took out nearly half the field and most of the top contenders. Haley passed a number of wrecked cars and then several more that made pit stops.

“I had no expectation to win this race,” said Haley, admitting he’d have quickly been passed for the lead if the race resumed. “Yes, I really did pray for rain.”

The 20yearold won’t lock in a spot in the playoffs, though. He’s a fulltime driver in the secondtier Xfinity Series and was making his third Cup Series start — all for newcomer Spire Motorsports. The team’s No. 77 Chevrolet could secure a postseason bid, but only if it ends up in the top 30 in points.

William Byron was second, followed by Jimmie Johnson and Ty Dillon. Chevrolet took the top four spots. Ryan Newman was fifth in a Ford.

Cycling: Dutch rider Mike Teunissen kept the Tour de France yellow jersey as his JumboVisma squad won the team time trial.

The Dutch team’s riders covered the 17.1mile flat stage in the streets of Brussels in 28 minutes, 58 seconds — 20 seconds faster than defending champion Geraint Thomas’ Ineos team.

Teunissen, the first Dutch rider to wear the race leader’s jersey in 30 years, was a surprise winner of Saturday’s opening leg, marred by a crash near the finish.
