Trump taxes: President Trump’s New York state tax returns could be given to Congress under a measure signed Monday by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The new law directs state officials to share state returns of certain elected and appointed officials upon request from the chairpersons of several top congressional committees. The new law could give Congress a way around the president’s refusal to release his returns, though it’s expected to face legal challenges. State tax documents from the president’s home state would likely contain much of the same information as the contested federal returns, tax experts say.

Cruise death: A 1yearold girl slipped from her grandfather’s hands and fell to her death from the 11th story of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico, police said Monday. The girl was traveling with her family aboard the Freedom of the Seas, which docked in San Juan after a trip through the Caribbean. The death occurred Sunday. Police Sgt. Nelson Sotelo said the toddler’s grandfather, Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Ind., is under investigation. The police chief of South Bend, Ind., confirmed that the girl was the daughter of Officer Alan Wiegand. Royal Caribbean Cruises called it a tragic incident and said it was helping the family.

Kansas politics: Kris Kobach began a campaign Monday for the U.S. Senate in Kansas amid tepid support from some Republicans worried that his recent loss in the governor’s race could threaten the party’s Senate majority. Kobach filed paperwork creating a campaign committee for a run at the GOP nomination next year. He is seeking the seat held by fourterm GOP Sen. Pat Roberts, who is not running for reelection. “Just last year, Kris Kobach ran and lost to a Democrat,” said Jesse Hunt, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the political arm of the Senate GOP. “Now, he wants to do the same and simultaneously put President Trump’s presidency and Senate majority at risk.”

Deputy killed: A Georgia sheriff ’s deputy was killed in a shootout Sunday night in Gainesville. Nicholas Dixon — a 28yearold who leaves behind a wife and two children — was shot when deputies had tried to stop a stolen vehicle. Hall County Sheriff Gerald Crouch said Monday that Hector Garcia was arrested and charged with felony murder in Dixon’s death. Gainesville is about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Deadly crash: A headon collision of two motorcycles killed four people on an Orange County road. The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday on Santiago Canyon Road near Lake Forest and emergency responders found two men and two women dead. California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivero said a northbound motorcycle with two people aboard attempted to pass a car by entering the southbound lane where it collided with the other motorcycle, which also had two people aboard. The car did not become involved in the crash. Identities of the dead were not immediately released.
