Brooklyn shooting: Latenight gunfire at a large, outdoor event in New York City killed one man, wounded 11 others and sent hundreds of people running for cover. The shooting erupted just as the crowd in Brooklyn was beginning to disperse Saturday, witnesses said. Police Commissioner James O’Neill said no arrests have been made. A 38yearold man died after he was shot in the head. His identity was not released. As many as 3,000 people were attending the event.

Slave ship: The state of Alabama filed a claim in federal court in Mobile to preserve the wreckage of the last ship known to bring enslaved people from Africa to the United States. The Alabama Historical Commission said the claim is an attempt to prevent salvagers from disturbing the ship. In 1860, the Clotilda illegally transported 110 people from what is now the west African nation of Benin to Mobile. The wooden ship was then taken into delta waters north of the port and burned to avoid detection of the illegal trip. Researchers this year announced they discovered the wreckage.

Bus trek: A woman from Belarus who was swept away by a river in Alaska was trying to reach an abandoned bus made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.” Veramika Maikamava, 24, and her husband, Piotr Markielau, 24, were heading for the bus last week where hiker Christopher McCandless met his death in 1992. The bus has been the source of multiple rescues since it was made famous, first by Jon Krakauer’s book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn’s 2007 film. The couple was trying to cross the Teklanika River near Healy when the woman was swept away, state troopers said.

Puerto Rico politics: The woman who is supposed to replace Puerto Rico’s embattled governor amid a political crisis says she doesn’t want the job. Justice Secretary Wanda Vazquez tweeted Sunday that she hopes Gov. Ricardo Rossello will appoint a secretary of state before resigning Aug. 2 as planned. Former Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marin would have been next in line, but he is one of more than a dozen officials who have resigned since someone leaked an obscenitylaced chat in which Rossello and close advisers insulted people including women and victims of Hurricane Maria. Vazquez, who is next in line, said she has told Rossello about her wishes.

School shooting: A man who was 11 years old when he and a teenager fatally shot four students and a teacher at an Arkansas school more than 20 years ago died in a crash in Arkansas. State Police say a vehicle driven by Drew Grant, 33, who legally changed his name from Andrew Golden, collided with another vehicle Saturday night. The driver of the other car, Daniel Petty, 59, was also killed. Golden and Mitchell Johnson, who were 11 and 13 respectively, set off a fire alarm in 1998 and shot at people as they evacuated from Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, about 115 miles northeast of Little Rock. Johnson was in custody until 2005, and Golden was released in 2007.
