Report: MRI exam shows Bosa has sprained ankle

- By Eric Branch

Offensive linemen haven’t had much luck slowing Nick Bosa in training camp, but another injury did Wednesday.

The 49ers’ rookie edge rusher — the overall No. 2 pick — had an MRI exam after he was injured in practice that revealed a sprained ankle, NFL Network reported. The injury is not considered serious, but the 49ers might hold Bosa out of preseason games as a precaution.

Bosa, who was caught up in a pile of several players on a running play, remained on the field for several minutes Wednesday before he walked off slowly with two trainers.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh indicated Bosa’s injury likely wasn’t severe when he spoke with reporters shortly after practice.

“I think he’s all right,” Saleh

said. “... I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.”

However, Bosa’s injury history could be a growing concern: Before he went down in the 10th practice of training camp, he sustained a hamstring injury in his second NFL practice in May and missed the rest of the offseason program.

Last year, Bosa played in just three games at Ohio State because of a coremuscle injury that required surgery. He also sustained a torn ACL as a senior in high school.

Bosa’s brilliance has been the biggest story of the 49ers’ training camp. He set the tone for his strong summer by beating Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley on three snaps in his second practice.

“He’s been progressing very well,” Saleh said. “Very pleased with him. He’s got a knack for pass rush. He’s very good in the run game. At this point, he’s progressing very well and we’re all very excited about him.”

Said quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo: “He’s just a savvy rookie. To be able to play the run and pass the way he does, it’s impressive.”

The 49ers’ defensive line was thinned by injuries even before Bosa was sidelined: Arik Armstead (calf ) and Ronald Blair (groin) appeared on the injury report and Dee Ford (knee) remained out.

In other injury news, cornerback Jason Verrett had an MRI that revealed a mild ankle sprain after he was also injured in practice Wednesday, the NFL Network reported. Verrett did not return after he tackled running back Raheem Mostert to the ground on the fifth play of team drills. Verrett is returning from a torn Achilles he sustained a little more than a year ago and has played in just five games the past three seasons because of leg injuries.

In addition, wide receiver Marquise Goodwin limped off the field with a lower right leg injury after he fell down hard on a route, but he did return to practice.
