Topseeded Rafael Nadal opened his Rogers Cup title defense in Montreal, beating England’s Daniel Evans 76 (6), 64 in a secondroun­d match delayed by rain three times.

In Toronto, where the women’s draw of the Rogers Cup is held, Serena Williams won her first match since losing the Wimbledon final, beating Elise Mertens of Belgium 63, 63.

Also, Wimbledon champion Simona Halep of Romania beat American qualifier Jennifer Brady 46, 75, 76 (5), and secondrank­ed Naomi Osaka of Japan reached the third round when German qualifier Tatjana Maria retired because of a left abdominal injury. College football: Standardiz­ed injury reports will not be implemente­d across college football this season after the NCAA explored the possibilit­y in response to the rise of legalized sports betting.
