NEWS OF THE DAY
From Around the World
_1 Mosque shooting: Police in Norway’s capital said Sunday that a shooting at a mosque that wounded one person is being investigated as an attempted terrorist attack and that the alleged perpetrator is also a suspect in a separate slaying. A suspect was in custody after the shooting Saturday at the AlNoor Islamic Center in the Oslo suburb of Baerum. Police official Rune Skjold said the suspect, a man in his 20s, holds extreme rightwing views and animosity toward immigrants. After the shooting, police went to his residence and said they found his 17yearold stepsister dead. Police said the man is a suspect in that killing.
_2 Monsoon deaths: At least 93 people have been killed and more than 400,000 displaced in floods and mudslides following days of torrential rains in southern India. In the worsthit state of Kerala the death toll rose to 57, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted. South Asia has continued to face rainrelated disasters during the current monsoon season, with 160 people killed last month in northeastern India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Monsoon rains have also inundated much of Pakistan, flooding large parts of the southern city of Karachi and causing at least 17 deaths as of Sunday.
_3 Brazil deforestation: The government of Germany plans to stop supporting forest and biodiversity projects in Brazil because of what it sees as evidence of the country’s lack of commitment to curbing deforestation in the Amazon region, the German newspaper Tagesspiegel reported. The Environment Ministry is planning to initially freeze some 35 million euros ($39.6 million), the newspaper said. Environment Minister Svenja Schulze told the paper that “the policies of the Brazilian government are raising doubt on whether a consequential reduction of deforestation rates is still being pursued.”
_4 Canary Islands fire: Spanish authorities say a wildfire on Gran Canaria has burned almost 2,500 acres and has forced the evacuation of 1,000 residents. The regional government of the Canary Islands said Sunday that 200 firefighters and 10 waterdumping aircraft were working to combat the blaze that started on Saturday for reasons still unknown. Spain’s military emergency unit that specializes in fighting fires also has deployed to the area. Spanish state broadcaster RTVE says the evacuations were a precaution and no homes have been burned.
_5 Britain crime: Prime Minister Boris Johnson is promising more prisons and stronger police powers in an effort to fight violent crime. The government announced plans Sunday to create 10,000 more prison places to ease overcrowding and said it would allow police to stop and search people without reasonable suspicion “if serious violence is anticipated.” Such powers are contentious because young minority men are disproportionately likely to be stopped and searched. Opposition Labor Party spokeswoman Diane Abbott said it was “a triedandtested recipe for unrest, not violence reduction.” Government statistics show violent crime has begun to rise after declining for two decades.
_6 Deadly typhoon: The death toll from a powerful typhoon that hit southeastern China rose to 33 on Sunday. Sixteen people were still missing in Zhejiang province, authorities said. Typhoon Lekima triggered landslides and floods after making landfall in Zhejiang early Saturday, about 190 miles south of Shanghai. Most of the victims were in a village in Yongjia county.
