NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Strategic Greenland: President Trump said Sunday the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark came up in conversations within his administration and that it’s essentially “a large real estate deal.” The semiautonomous territory of Denmark has said it’s not for sale. In remarks to reporters, Trump cast the possible purchase as a strategic move by the U.S. but not a top priority for his administration. The U.S. military has operated for decades from Thule Air Base in Greenland.
2 Plane crash: A plane crashed into a home in Union Vale, N.Y., killing one resident and one person on the aircraft and sparking a large fire, state police said. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating why the Cessna 303 went down Saturday in the town about 15 miles southeast of Poughkeepsie. State police said three men were on the plane; one died and two were injured. Of three people in the home, one died, another was seriously hurt and the third is missing. The Cessna left an airport in LaGrangeville, a mile from the crash, and was headed to East Farmingdale.
3 Chemical spill: A steel company has apologized for a spill of cyanide and ammonia that led to a fish kill and prompted the closure of beaches in Indiana along Lake Michigan. ArcelorMittal issued a statement saying it “apologizes and accepts responsibility for the incident from the Burns Harbor facility.” The National Park Service closed the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk beach areas at Indiana Dunes National Park. The nearby city of Ogden Dunes also closed its beach.
4 Obama jersey: A basketball jersey believed to have been worn by former President Barack Obama while he was at a Honolulu prep school has sold at auction for $120,000. Heritage Auctions said the jersey sold Saturday night in Dallas to a collector of American and sports artifacts who didn’t wish to be identified. The jersey was offered by Peter Noble, who was three years behind Obama at Punahou School. Noble, now 55 and living in Seattle, said the jersey was destined for the trash when he picked it up. Years later he saw an old photo of Obama wearing a No. 23 jersey while at school. The auction house says details on the shirt match the one Obama is photographed wearing. Noble says a portion of the sale will go to the school.
5 Organic fraud: A judge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sentenced the mastermind of the largest known organic food fraud scheme in U.S. history to 10 years in prison, saying he cheated thousands of customers. U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams on Friday said Randy Constant orchestrated a major fraud that did “extreme and incalculable damage” to consumers and shook public confidence in the nation’s organic food industry. Williams said that, from 2010 to 2017, consumers nationwide were fooled into paying extra to buy products ranging from eggs to steak that they believed were better for the environment and their own health. Williams ordered Constant, 60, a farmer and former school board president from Chillicothe, Mo., to serve 122 months in federal prison.
