Absence of content in Trump’s character

- Send via our online form: sfchronicle.com/letters

Martin Luther King Jr. famously dreamed of a time when all people would be judged by the content of their character. Many of us were taught that the core of a person’s character is made up of the ethical values of honesty and integrity, taking responsibility for one’s actions, being fair and just, and respecting others.

In my opinion, this description has absolutely no resemblance to the man we elected to lead our country. His recent action of eliciting help from a foreign nation to punish two of his political enemies who are duly elected members of our Congress shows a total lack of character and degrades the office of the president of our nation. Paul Marra, Corte Madera

Locals love Cliff House

What a surprise to see the Cliff House described in The Chronicle as “the famed tourist attraction.” I live in San Francisco, and my family, friends and my Full Moon Cocktail group all enjoy eating there. I even stop by for occasional spontaneous lunches — if I find a parking space. San Franciscans spend time and money at Cliff House, and I hope it won’t be reimagined as a tourist trap run by outsiders.

China has taken note

The president often asks crowds if they’ve read his book. Not only have the Chinese read “The Art of the Deal,” they have written the sequel. John Kallio, Pleasanton

Curious play on robots

Friday’s lead story on Page One was about the judge who released a mentally disturbed man who assaulted a woman. The man said he was trying to protect her from the robots taking over the city. The story underneath it was about delivery robots on the streets of San Francisco. This was either a big mistake or genius placement.

Trump Pyramid

On Friday we learned that the classic San Francisco landmark, the Transamerica Pyramid, is for sale. President Trump’s plan to buy Greenland evidently won’t work out. So what about purchasing the Pyramid? The Trump family has the money and they own properties worldwide too numerous to count. This would be their first pyramid, I believe.

The Trump Pyramid: Very fitting for someone who sees himself more like a pharaoh than a president.

Better investment

So San Francisco’s school board chooses to only cover up the outdated relic, as some of board members call the mural, at George Washington High School. Since when does factual history become outdated and a relic? And how can it cost $875,000 to cover it? Are they using goldthreaded tapestries? How does covering it up make one feel safe (the history does not go away)? It’s hard to find safe spaces at Civic Center, the Tenderloin and even Market Street, where living history is not pleasant to view.

I would think that the $875,000 would be much better spent cleaning up these areas to expand safe spaces for everyone. Skip Hutchison, Alameda

Booze ball in Berkeley

As a former Berkeley resident and one who played football (not for Cal), I’m dismayed that UC Berkeley will soon start selling beer and wine at football games to make the games “more enjoyable.” Driving in Berkeley is tricky enough, and when 30,000 fans are leaving the stadium all at once it can be even worse, for pedestrians as well as drivers. If one can’t enjoy a game without booze, one can always watch it at home on TV.

Of course, that won’t help pay down the nearly halfbilliondollar cost of the improvements to the stadium and athletics center. Alan Goldfarb, San Rafael

Give him credit

There is redemption for 45 after all. He is not completely worthless. He can always stand as a bad example. Jacob Hart, Oakland

America’s great divide

The real divide in America is between the rational and the antirational. President Trump and his troops believe in the power of will, not science and not reason. He thinks he can will the world into whatever he wants. This is insane — the insanity of the powerful. The truth does not limit his will — truth is what he says it is. So climate change is a hoax — he wills it so. If America turns from oil to fight climate change, Russia will collapse.

No wonder Russia will do anything to support the climate denier.

Trump must go. If not, this country will collapse. Michel Quihillalt, Clearlake
