Giants beat: Webb will stay in rotation — next start uncertain.

PHOENIX — Yes, 22yearold Logan Webb is going to get another start after winning his bigleague debut Saturday night. The date is not certain.

The Giants could have optioned Webb to TripleA when they promoted infielder Abiatal Avelino on Sunday but instead designated lefthanded Rule 5 pick Travis Bergen for assignment so they would not have to wait 10 days to pitch Webb again.

Two upcoming off days, Monday and (oddly) Friday, make the timing uncertain. The Giants could use the calendar to skip a fifth starter and still allow the other four to pitch on five days’ rest.

Tyler Beede, Dereck Rodriguez and Jeff Samardzija will start at Wrigley Field, Tuesday through Thursday. Beede’s spot appeared to be in jeopardy after another bad game Wednesday against Oakland that raised his ERA over the past five starts to 8.49.

However, the Giants seem committed to seeing things through with their 2014 firstround draft pick.

“It’s our job to try to get him over the hump,” manager Bruce Bochy said.

Shaun Anderson, who also struggled before he went on the injured list with a blister, will not start anytime soon. He will make at least one minorleague rehab appearance.

Webb, taken three rounds after Beede in 2014, held the Diamondbacks to one earned run over five innings with a walk and seven strikeouts in Saturday’s 116 victory. By the time he dressed for Sunday’s game, he had received 159 text messages.

“I’ll get to all of them at some point,” he said.

Bergen gone: The Giants had to recall a position player to restore a fourman bench after going with three for one night and picked Avelino, who arrived from the Yankees last August in the Andrew McCutchen trade. A pitcher had to go and the Giants thought Bergen was the most expendable.

The 25yearold pitched fairly well before a shoulder injury landed him on the IL for nearly three months. A few bad games ballooned his ERA to 5.49.

The Giants selected Bergen in the December Rule 5 draft. Under Rule 5, they need to offer him back to the Blue Jays if he clears waivers. The Giants also took Houston outfielder Drew Ferguson in the draft and returned him to the Astros on March 22.

Incident update: A 56yearold man who collapsed and stopped breathing in the stands behind home plate in the second inning Saturday was said to be responsive at a hospital.

The man is a friend of Giants pitching coach Curt Young, who left him the ticket. Nearby fans immediately began CPR before paramedics arrived. They continued resuscitation efforts before transporting him to an ambulance.
