MLB: Nationals hit eight homers, rout Brewers.

Juan Soto hit two of his team’s eight home runs Sunday as the Nationals rebounded from a 14inning loss a night earlier by beating Milwaukee 168 in Washington.

Matt Adams and Victor Robles hit backtoback homers in the first to give the Nationals a 40 lead, and Anthony Rendon and Soto did the same in the third as the advantage ballooned to 130. Washington has hit backtoback homers 10 times this season.

“We got started off on such a bad foot,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “We give up four in the first, that’s a tough way to start. We never got a chance, really.” Soto also homered in the fifth, his 28th of the year. Brian Dozier had his first multihomer game of the season and Adam Eaton — who had a tworun triple in the second — hit his 10th homer in the fifth.

“It’s one of those things where today’s game is difficult on everybody and we wanted to try to get out there early, get on them early,” Eaton said. “We knew it was going to be a slugfest.”

Milwaukee’s Chase Anderson allowed a careerhigh 10 runs in 21⁄3 innings.

Mets 11, Royals 5: Pete Alonso hit his 40th homer to break the National League rookie record and cap a late outburst by visiting New York. Amed Rosario put the Mets ahead 6-4 with a two-run single in the seventh, and Alonso went deep in the ninth. He snapped a tie with the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger, who hit 39 home runs in 2017 on the way to winning Rookie of the Year honors.

Padres 3, Phillies 2: Austin Hedges had four hits, including a tie-breaking homer, for visiting San Diego. Philadelphia outfielder Bryce Harper left the game because of dehydration.

Cardinals 5, Reds 4: Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer and Tommy Edman added a solo shot among his three hits for visiting St. Louis, which remained percentage points ahead of the Cubs for the NL Central lead.

Cubs 7, Pirates 1: Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant each had a homer and double and Jose Quintana pitched seven shutout innings for Chicago, winner of two in a row, in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa.

Rays 5, Tigers 4: Ji-Man Choi’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth completed Tampa Bay’s rally from a three-run deficit. The Rays extended their lead over the A’s to 1½ games in the race for the AL’s second wild-card spot.

Twins 6, Rangers 3: Jorge Polanco hit a tie-breaking three-run triple in the eighth as visiting Minnesota completed its first four-game sweep of Texas. The Twins maintained a 2½-game lead over second-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

Red Sox 13, Orioles 7: Rafael Devers went 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs for host Boston, which erased a six-run deficit.

Indians 8, Yankees 4: Mike Freeman hit a three-run homer and two doubles and Mike Clevinger struck out 10 in five shutout innings for visiting Cleveland, which earned a split of the fourgame series.

Braves 5, Dodgers 3: Rafael Ortega’s sixth-inning grand slam propelled host Atlanta. Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. was pulled before the fifth after failing to run out a drive off the rightfield wall in the third. The ball bounced off the wall for a single. Cody Bellinger hit his majors-best 42nd homer for Los Angeles.

Mariners 7, Blue Jays 0: Rookie Yusei Kikuchi pitched a twohitter in Toronto for his first major-league shutout.

Rockies 7, Marlins 6: Nolan Arenado hit two homers, and Garrett Hampson hit a game-ending single in the 10th for Colorado.

Angels 9, White Sox 2: Shohei Ohtani, Kole Calhoun and Matt Thaiss hit homers for host Los Angeles.
