Exbroadcas­ter Whitaker, 95, dies

Jack Whitaker, whose Hall of Fame broadcasti­ng career ranged from the first Super Bowl to Secretaria­t’s Triple Crown to short essays from major sporting events, died of natural causes in Devon, Pa. He was 95.

Whitaker, a Philadelph­ia native who was wounded on Omaha Beach three days after the DDay invasion, began his broadcast career at WCAUTV in Philadelph­ia and spent 22 years working for CBS Sports.

He worked for ABC from 1982 in news and sports, and was part of its Olympics coverage in 1984 and 1988.

CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said Whitaker’s writing, presence on air and humanity were unmatched.

“His unique perspectiv­e on sports ranging from horse racing to golf to NFL football was extraordin­ary,” he said.

Tennis: Madison Keys rallied late in both sets and beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 75, 76 (5) for her first Western & Southern Open championsh­ip in Mason, Ohio. By winning her first hardcourt final since the 2017 U.S. Open, Keys will be ranked No. 10 when she returns this week to the Open in New York.

On the men’s side, Daniil Medvedev beat David Goffin 76 (3), 64 for his first Masters 1000 title. It was his third straight final, but the first time the 23yearold Russian had won. He’s the youngest Cincinnati champion since Andy Murray at age 21 in 2008.

WNBA: Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points and hit three of Washington’s WNBArecord 18 3pointers in the Mystics’ 10768 victory over the visiting Indiana Fever. The Mystics broke the 3point record of 17 set by Seattle last year against Las Vegas . ... Courtney Williams scored 18 points and the host Connecticu­t Sun beat the Dallas Wings 7868 to clinch a playoff berth . ... DeWanna Bonner scored 17 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter to help the host Phoenix Mercury beat New York 7872, extending the Liberty’s losing streak to eight . ... Jordin Canada scored 14 points and the host Seattle Storm never trailed in an 8274 victory over the Minnesota Lynx . ... A’ja Wilson returned from a ninegame absence to score 25 points off the bench, Liz Cambage had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Las Vegas beat host Chicago 10085.

Soccer: In MLS, Leandro Gonzalez and Josef Martinez scored and Brad Guzan had five saves in the clean sheet as visiting Atlanta United defeated the Portland Timbers 20.

A fight between fans of rival soccer teams Motagua and Olimpia at the National Stadium in Tegucigalp­a, Honduras’ capital, left four people dead and led to the suspension of the game. A fight broke out between fans, with fists flying and gunfire heard. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Frank Lampard’s winless run to start his tenure as Chelsea manager extended to three games after Leicester rallied to earn a 11 draw in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.
