49ers bring in tackle Sam Young for a look.

A day after head coach Kyle Shanahan said there weren’t many attractive options at offensive tackle for the 49ers, they were expected to host an offensive tackle they fired less than three weeks ago.

The 49ers were scheduled to visit Tuesday with Sam Young, 32, whom they released Aug. 30, ESPN reported. The 49ers signed Young on Aug. 12 after swing tackle Shon Coleman sustained a seasonending injury. They are now seeking a tackle because Pro Bowler Joe Staley sustained a broken fibula in Sunday’s 4117 win at Cincinnati.

The 49ers parted with Young and retained rookie sixthround pick Justin Skule and tackle/guard Daniel Brun

skill. However, Skule and Brunskill, a 2017 undrafted free agent, have scant experience. Skule played his first 19 NFL snaps Sunday after Staley was injured. Brunskill, who was inactive for the first two games, hasn’t played an NFL snap in a career that began with two seasons on the Falcons’ practice squad.

Meanwhile, Young is a nineyear veteran with 21 career starts. He started six games for Miami in 2017 and made his lone start last year Nov. 11.

The 49ers are expected to give Skule his first career start Sunday when they host the Steelers in their home opener. On Monday, Shanahan explained why the 49ers retained Skule instead of Young.

“We kept Skule because we thought he was the best available,” Shanahan said. “That doesn’t change now. I think Skule’s going to get a lot better throughout his career, but we kept him on this team because he can help us win now. Unfortunately, he’s going to get thrown into that right now. We were hoping it wouldn’t happen that way.”

The 49ers signed offensive tackle Will Holden, 26, to the practice squad Tuesday. Holden, a 2017 fifthround pick of the Cardinals, started seven games for Arizona before he was waived in July. He was a teammate of Skule’s at Vanderbilt. Holden joins undrafted rookie offensive tackle Ryan

Pope on the practice squad. Longsnapper swap: The 49ers signed long snapper Jon Condo, 38, a twotime Pro Bowl selection who played for the Raiders from 2006 through ’17.

The 49ers waived long snapper Colin Holba, who had been with the team since December when previous long snapper Kyle Nelson began serving the first four games of his 10game suspension for performanceenhancing drugs. Nelson, who has four games left on his suspension, remains with the team on the reserve/ suspended by commissioner list.

Condo, who played in four games with the Falcons at the end of 2018, was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2011. He is the oldest member of the team and will be snapping on fieldgoal tries for the 49ers’ secondoldest player, kicker Robbie Gould, 36. Draft pick claimed: The 49ers lost a 2019 draft pick Monday when rookie tight end Kaden Smith was claimed off waivers by the Giants.

Smith is the only one of the team’s 17 draft picks over the past two years who is not with the team: 13 are on the 53man roster, two are on injured reserve and another is on the practice squad.

On Saturday, the 49ers waived Smith, a sixthround pick from Stanford, to promote running back Jeff Wilson from the practice squad.
