Severino impresses, but Betances is done

-

In his season debut, the Yankees’ Luis Severino pitched four dominant innings and hit 98.8 mph in an 80 win over the Angels on Tuesday night that moved host New York to the brink of clinching its 21st postseason appearance in 25 years.

“It was exciting. It was fun going out there and hearing the fans,” Severino said.

But after the game, New York said reliever Dellin Betances partially tore the Achilles tendon in his left foot when he hopped on the mound after striking out Brandon Drury, his second batter in his season debut Sunday at Toronto.

“It’s about as freak as it can be,” manager Aaron Boone said.

Betances’ season appears over after eight pitches. He and Severino spent the summer rehabbing together, both of them dealing with shoulder and lat injuries that began in spring training.

“Just sad,” Severino said. “He was so happy in Toronto when he pitched that game.”

The Yankees’ Gleyber Torres hit his 38th homer, a threerun drive, and Didi Gregorius doubled in two runs.

Blue Jays 8, Orioles 5: Rookie Cavan Biggio hit for the cycle for visiting Toronto. He homered in the third inning, singled in the sixth, doubled in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. Biggio and his father, Craig, a Hall of Famer with the Astros, are the second father-son duo in big-league history to hit for the cycle, joining Gary and Daryle Ward.

Twins 9, White Sox 8: Minnesota rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 12th, with Marwin Gonzalez singling in two runs Ronald Torreyes getting hit with the bases full to drive in the game-winner. Ryan Cordell had hit a two-run homer for Chicago in the top of the inning.

Reds 4, Cubs 2: For host Chicago, Yu Darvish struck out eight straight Reds and 13 in all, but he also gave up three first-inning runs. Ex-A’s pitcher Sonny Gray struck out nine for Cincinnati. The Cubs are tied with Milwaukee for the second NL wild-card spot.

Brewers 3, Padres 1: Mike Moustakas hit his 35th home run of the season and Lorenzo Cain also went deep as host Milwaukee won for the 11th time in 12 games.

Phillies 5, Braves 4: Rhys Hoskins and Jose Pirela hit two-run homers off Dallas Keuchel in a five-run fourth inning for visiting Philadelphia.

Mets 6, Rockies 1: Marcus Stroman pitched seven shutout innings, and Amed Rosario, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso all homered in the sixth for visiting New York.

Nationals 6, Cardinals 2: Howie Kendrick was a triple shy of the cycle, and Patrick Corbin pitched six solid innings for visiting Washington.

Indians 7, Tigers 2: Adam Plutko pitched six effective innings, rookie Oscar Mercado homered and host Cleveland beat Detroit for the 15th straight time.

Astros 4, Rangers 1: Justin Verlander picked up his majorleague-leading 19th win and Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez all homered for host Houston.

Mariners 6, Pirates 0: Marco Gonzales allowed six hits in seven innings, Austin Nola and Omar Narvaez hit back-toback home runs and visiting Seattle defeated Pittsburgh.
