Sacramento grabs title

- STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

Lefthander Caleb Baragar worked five innings, combining with three relievers on a threehitter, as the Sacramento River Cats beat the Columbus Clippers 40 in Memphis on Tuesday night to become the TripleA champions.

Sacramento, the Giants’ affiliate that won the Pacific Coast League title, got three hits apiece from infielders Abiatal Avelino and Levi Michael and two RBIs from outfielder Jacob Heyward in beating Columbus, the Cleveland affiliate that won the International League championship.

Kipnis out:

Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis has a broken right hand. He will need surgery on the fractured hamate bone, the same injury that has kept third baseman Jose Ramirez out of Cleveland’s lineup for weeks. The team said Kipnis will need four to six weeks to recover, which means the earliest he could be back is midOctober.

The Indians have been affected all season by injuries, the most significant ones to Ramirez, outfielder Tyler Naquin and twotime Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since breaking his arm May 1.

Naquin recently underwent seasonending knee surgery after crashing into the leftfield wall while making a catch in Tampa. Ramirez has been playing catch and taking groundballs. He could begin hitting drills soon.

Phils’ Dickerson done:

Philadelphia’s Corey Dickerson will not return this season after an injury to his left foot was determined to be a fracture.

The Phillies placed the outfielder on the 60day injured list Tuesday. He fouled a ball off the foot Sept. 4 and had not played since last Wednesday. Initial Xrays were negative, so Tuesday’s announcement was a surprise.

Philadelphia acquired Dickerson from Pittsburgh on July 31. He hit .304 overall with 12 homers and 59 RBIs, including .293 with eight homers with the Phillies.

Stanton due back:

Giancarlo Stanton will be activated by the Yankees on Wednesday or Thursday. Stanton has been limited to nine games this year because of biceps, shoulder, calf and knee ligament strains. He will get time at designated hitter and left field.
