Boxer Day dies of brain injuries
Boxer Patrick Day died Wednesday, four days after sustaining head injuries in a fight with Charles Conwell. Promoter Lou DiBella said Day died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital near Chicago. He was 27.
Day had brain surgery after being knocked out in the 10th round Saturday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. From Freeport, N.Y., Day had a career record of 1741 with six knockouts. As an amateur, he won two National titles, the New York Golden Gloves tournament and was a U.S. Olympic team alternate in 2012.
Boxer Errol Spence Jr., the WBC and IBF welterweight champion, was discharged from a Dallas hospital and charged with drunken driving after crashing his speeding Ferrari on Oct. 10.
Police say the crash happened when Spence’s car crossed the median into oncoming traffic, flipped over several times and hurled Spence from the car. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated for facial lacerations.
NBA: The Los Angeles Clippers signed guard B.J. Taylor to an exhibit 10 contract, a oneyear deal worth the minimum salary. Taylor played four years at Central Florida, where he averaged 15.6 points and 3.1 assists. Tennis: American Coco Gauff, 15, lost her opening match at the Luxembourg Open — to Anna Blinkova 64, 60 — just three days after winning her first WTA title in Austria. Golf: Helen Alfredsson added the Senior LPGA Championship to her U.S. Senior Women’s Open title, rallying at cold and windy French Lick (Ind.) Resort to sweep the two major championships of the season. Three strokes behind Los Altos’ Juli Inkster entering the day, Alfredsson closed with a 2underpar 70 for a threestroke victory.
