Game review
OFFENSE
The 49ers scored their most points since 1993, had four touchdowns on five red-zone trips, had 232 rushing yards while averaging 6.1 yards a carry, and had six plays of 20-plus yards … without their Pro Bowl left tackle, Pro Bowl fullback and first-round-pick right tackle. Tevin Coleman (105 yards rushing) was barely touched on his four TDs thanks to tremendous blocking and top-end speed. Jimmy Garoppolo’s efficient performance (sound familiar?) was slightly marred by a terrible interception (sound familiar?), which led to an 18-yard field-goal drive. Left tackle Justin Skule allowed a safety when he was badly beaten by Bruce Irvin for a sack.
DEFENSE
Poor Kyle Allen. He hadn’t lost an NFL game, hadn’t thrown an interception — and hadn’t faced a defense like that.
He’ll see Nick Bosa (three sacks, interception) in his nightmares, although his unpleasant dreams also will feature Arik Armstead (two sacks) and cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Emmanuel Moseley, who had picks for a defense that limited Allen to a 28.9 QB rating and 4.3 yards per pass attempt. Given the safety and Garoppolo’s pick, the Panthers really managed only seven points against this unit, coming on Christian McCaffrey’s 40-yard run.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Mitch Wishnowky, the eager-to-tackle rookie punter, managed to get a 15-yard penalty for lowering his helmet while mixing it up on a kickoff return. But he was better at his primary job: None of Wishnowky’s three punts was returned, and they put the Panthers at their 7-, 2- and 18-yard lines. Gunner extraordinaire Raheem Mostert blasted Reggie
Bonnafon at the 10 when he muffed a kickoff return in the first quarter. The 49ers failed to convert an extra-point try when Wishnowsky, the holder, took off with the ball when it appeared the kick would be blocked.
COACHING
After receiver Deebo Samuel went untouched on his 20-yard TD run up the middle, which began with a fake handoff to in-motion receiver Emmanuel Sanders, running back Matt Breida patted Kyle Shanahan on the back and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh shook his hand. Shanahan was it again on Coleman’s 1-yard TD run. Defensive tackle Sheldon Day, lined up at fullback, went to block to the left and Coleman went right for the oh-so-easy score.
OVERALL
The Panthers aren’t a bad team. Seriously.
You’ll have to trust us on that. The 49ers’ demolition of a group on a four-game win streak that was coming off a bye had to convince the last remaining skeptics that they’re a legitimate force.
