Snapshots, captions that show football philosophies
A few lasting snapshots, captions and quotes from the state Open and 1A division championships football games at Cerritos College in Norwalk (Los Angeles County):
Snapshot: Near the injury tent, Serra coach Patrick Walsh wraps his arms around the shoulders of senior quarterback Daylin McLemore in the middle of the fourth quarter of a 3527 Division 1A loss to Corona del MarNewport Beach.
Caption: McLemore — six weeks after breaking his collarbone — returned and played brilliantly (16for18, 159 yards, rushing TD), only to be knocked out early in the fourth quarter on a late hit out of bounds.
Quote: Walsh — “I told him your choice and decision and performance tonight will go down as one of the gutsiest and most loving performances for your teammates in the history of the school.”
Snapshot: De La SalleConcord’s Charles McAdoo has a free shot at St. John BoscoBellflower QBDJ Uiagalelei.
Caption: McAdoo hit the 6foot5, 245pound Clemsonbound recruit at full force — and bounced backward as Uiagalelei completed a 15yard pass. Uiagalelei was 23for28 for 398 yards and four TDs and rushed for another in a 4928 Open Division victory for the national champs.
Quote: De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh — “He’s even better in person than on tape. He’s freaking unbelievable.”
Snapshot: Corona del Mar’s righthanded quarterback Ethan
Garbers is chased to his left, threads the needle between two defenders on a 8yard completion to Mark Redman who was sprinting right.
Caption: The thirddown play came toward the beginning of a 99yard drive that included five more completions from the 63, 200pound, Washingtonbound QB (398 yards, five TDs).
Quote: Walsh — “Some of the throws and catches that were made you only see on Sundays.”
Snapshot: St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro with hands on hip and a quizzical look.
Caption: San Jose State commit Shamar Garrett had just taken a pitch from De La Salle teammate Dorian Hale, zipped right, then upfield past an entire FBSoffered secondary for a 60yard touchdown, one of three for him.
Quote: Negro — “They are so good and well conditioned. (Alumbaugh) does an amazing job. They just beat you up. I thought they were going to wear them down. They continued to battle, and those two little backs they have killed it. Their quarterback is a baller. That’s a great program.”
Snapshot: Walsh gathering his 60man roster on the field at the 30yard line.
Caption: The late hit on McLemore and a lategame fracas didn’t lead to any ejections, but the referees had Walsh and CDM’s Dan O’Shea get their teams in order.
Quote: Walsh — “What did Warren Buffett say, ‘It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to throw it all away’? ... I ended up being so proud of them overcoming straight teenage angst to put ourselves back in the game with a chance to win a state championship.”
