Vegas earns victory in DeBoer’s debut

-

Vegas’ Mark Stone had a goal and an assist and the Golden Knights made Peter DeBoer’s debut behind their bench a success with a 42 win over the Senators in Ottawa on Thursday night.

MarcAndre Fleury stopped 33 shots for the Knights, who snapped a fourgame losing streak a day after firing head coach Gerard Gallant.

DeBoer, who until Dec. 11 had been coaching the Sharks, didn’t have a lot of time to settle in.

“I told them if I call any of them Jumbo or Burnsie to kick me,” joked DeBoer in reference to Sharks players Joe Thornton and Brent Burns. “I didn’t make any mistakes on names, but it was a good night.

“It’s a good group and, like I said, a tough week and some hard days. I thought it was nice to get a win and kind of move past that.” Blue Jackets 3, Hurricanes 2: Nick Foligno scored the tie-breaking goal with 1:41 left for host Columbus. Rangers 3, Islanders 2: Chris Kreider scored a power-play goal with 25 seconds left to give the Rangers a win in Uniondale, N.Y. Canadiens 4, Flyers 1: Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice and Carey Price recorded 40 saves for visiting Montreal. Flames 2, Maple Leafs 1: Matthew Tkachuk scored the only goal of the shootout as visiting Calgary prevailed. Wild 3, Lightning 2: Zach Parise scored his team-leading 17th goal to help host Minnesota cool off Tampa Bay, which had won 11 of 12. Briefly: The Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Morgan Rielly is expected to be out until March with a broken foot . ... The Devils placed All-Star wing Kyle Palmieri on injured reserve because of a foot injury . ... Chicago forward Dylan Strome went on IR because of an ankle injury.
