Golden Gate Fields closed for weekend: no hot water

Racing at Golden Gate Fields was canceled for the rest of the weekend following the cancellation of Thursday’s program because of repairs from a gas leak near the Albany track that damaged the facility’s hot water system.

“There is no concern of a gas leak at Golden Gate Fields,” general manager and vice president David Duggan said in a statement. “Unfortunately, there was a leak in the area Thursday. In order to repair it, the utility company responsible for the gas line had to shut off the gas to the track. When they repressurized the lines afterward, it did some damage to the pipes that supply hot water to the facility.

“After speaking with specialists, it’s highly unlikely we will be fixed this weekend, so in the best interest of our horsemen, fans and employees and to safely expedite the repairs, we are canceling both racing and simulcasting this weekend. We feel confident we can be fully up and running by Thursday.”

The lack of hot water affects not only the track’s food and beverage service but also the barn area where portable hot water showers are being installed for backstretch workers.

Horses are able to exercise during the break, and there were 40 timed workouts recorded Thursday morning.

The cancellations mean the loss of 33 races, but they could be made up by adding events on future race dates.

The highlight of the winter portion of the season that runs through June 14 is the $100,000 El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15. Nominations for the 11⁄8mile race for 3yearolds close Thursday.
