1 Police shooting: Sacramento County will pay $1.725 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed after sheriff ’s deputies killed a mentally ill black man. An attorney for Mikel Laney McIntyre’s mother announced the settlement Thursday. Officers fired 28 rounds at McIntyre, in May 2017 during rush hour on a major highway. McIntyre had been undergoing a mental health crisis and threw large rocks at deputies, hitting one in the head, before trying to run away. The shooting resulted in a critical August 2018 county inspector general’s report, which said deputies fired an “excessive, unnecessary” number of rounds.

2 Campaign 2020: John Delaney announced Friday that he is ending his presidential campaign after spending millions of his own money in an effort that failed to resonate with voters. The former Maryland congressman has been running for president since July 2017, though Delaney’s early start did little to give him an advantage in the race or raise his name recognition with Democratic primary voters. In a field dominated by wellknown candidates from the liberal wing of the party, Delaney, 56, had called for a moderate approach with “real solutions, not impossible promises,” and dubbed the progressive goal of “Medicare for All” to be “political suicide.”

3 FAA probe: Roger Wicker, RMiss., chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, is asking the Transportation Department’s Inspector General to investigate misconduct allegations at the Federal Aviation Administration’s Hawaii field office. They involve an allegedly close relationship between an FAA manager and a helicopter tour company involved in three crashes during the past two years. Three people were killed in one of the crashes. Wicker said a whistleblower reported the allegations to the committee staff.

4 Security breach: A woman fleeing police smashed her SUV through two security checkpoints near MaraLago on Friday in Palm Beach, Fla., in what authorities said were the actions of an “obviously impaired” driver but not an intentional attack on President Trump’s resort. She was later arrested at a nearby motel. Trump was not at the resort at the time. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said an offduty Highway Patrol officer first approached the SUV because the woman, Hannah Roemhild, 30, was acting erratically and was dancing on top of the vehicle. She then drove off and led officers on a highspeed pursuit, said the Florida Highway Patrol. Officers fired rounds at her vehicle after she crashed through two checkpoints near MaraLago. 5 Tax evader: Elaine Brown, who took part in a ninemonth armed standoff to protest her tax evasion conviction, can be released after serving over 12 years in prison, a judge ruled Friday. Brown, 78, was resentenced in federal court after a charge that carried a mandatory minimum 30year sentence was vacated. She is scheduled to be released Feb. 28. Brown had been sentenced to 35 years in prison after the standoff at her fortresslike home in Plainfield, N.H., in 2007. Her husband, Edward Brown, was also sentenced. Militia groups had rallied to their cause.
