A 39yearold woman was arrested in a shooting that killed a teen nearly 15 years ago while he slept in an Antioch apartment following a dispute between the suspect and men she believed were rival gang members, authorities said Thursday.

Officers from Antioch and Pittsburg police took Candice Carter into custody Thursday afternoon with a highrisk arrest warrant after determining she was responsible for the death of 17yearold Edgar Martinez, who is not believed to have played any role in the original argument.

Police officials said the conflict started on March 27, 2005, when Carter argued with a group of men she thought were rival gang members on the 300 block of West 20th Street in Antioch. Carter allegedly returned about 11:37 p.m. with two men and fired into Martinez’s West 20th Street apartment, striking him in the chest as he slept next to his father.

At least one other person is suspected of firing shots and authorities said they expect to make more arrests.

The Chronicle reported at the time that Martinez had recently arrived in the U.S. from Mexico and worked in construction to send money to his mother and brother in Michoacan.

A dozen or more bullets were fired into the apartment building, where Martinez and his father lived with cousins, one of whom was a Sureño gang member who had trouble with local Norteños, according to several people The Chronicle interviewed at the time.

Officials booked Carter into the Martinez Detention Facility on $2 million bail.

Antioch police credited the arrest to “advancements in technology and help from the community.”

Chief Tammany Brooks III declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, but lauded his detectives’ persistence.

“I will just say our detectives have been doing an amazing job of constantly reviewing cold cases, following up on new leads, and utilizing advances in DNA and technology to give life to previously stalled investigations,” Brooks said.
