A 16yearold died after he was shot in the parking lot of an Antioch high school where a fight erupted among a group of juveniles after a basketball game, officials said Sunday.

Officers found the teen suffering from at least three gunshot wounds around 8:45 p.m. Friday in the north parking lot of Deer Valley High School, according to Antioch police. Officials took the teen, who was only identified as a student at the school, to a hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition.

On Sunday, the school’s superintendent, Stephanie Anello, and principal Bukky Oyebade announced that the student had died.

“Our hearts and sympathies are with the families during this time of unimaginable pain,” they wrote in a statement.

The shooting and fight occurred as people left the game between Deer Valley and Antioch High School, police said, adding the investigation had not yet identified a shooting suspect. No arrests have been made.

Anello and Oyebade said the fight followed “a peaceful athletic event” and urged the community to unite against violence.

“We, along with the rest of the (Antioch Unified School District), denounce this senseless violence and call on the community to come together to address such vicious brutality,” they said. “Our children must be taught that solving disagreements with violence is not the answer and that there are other ways to resolve our differences that do not result in the unjust and unnecessary killing of our youth.”

In a statement, Deer Valley officials said the school plans to have increased security personnel and additional counselors on its campus Monday. Antioch High School officials said counselors will also be available at the school Monday.
