127 at Comcast Livermore office facing layoffs
Telecommunications giant Comcast is laying off just under 130 employees at a logistics center in Livermore.
The internet and cable television provider, headquartered in Philadelphia, said in a filing with the California Employment Development Department that 127 employees, many of whom support field technicians, will lose their jobs under a reorganization that will see some roles shipped to Denver.
Comcast wrote that it would close its Technician Logistics Center department in Livermore and that some employees will be able to transfer elsewhere in the company. “However, it is expected that some employees will not be transferred and will have their employment separated on May 1, 2020,” the company wrote.
The company is not closing any physical facil
ities, and Livermore will remain the regional headquarters for Comcast in California, spokeswoman Joan Hammel wrote in an email.
“We are making some changes to our technical operations and supply chain processes. This includes consolidating some job functions and locations and also automating some processes so our technicians can best serve our customers. We will work with all impacted employees to evaluate their options, including helping them to find other positions within the company or providing outplacement assistance and severance,” Hammel said.
The majority of the roles that will leave the Livermore location are customer service agents; an expired job posting on LinkedIn suggests that the agents support field technicians who install systems for customers.
The company also owns NBCUniversal and struck a deal to purchase European broadcaster Sky in 2018.
The company reported adding internet customers at a steady clip in the fourth quarter despite declining cable subscription numbers.
Another telecom company, AT&T, also filed a notice with the state announcing the elimination of 32 management position in its San Ramon facility.
And the digital communications company 8X8 will lay off 63 employees across a variety of departments in its San Jose headquarters.
