Karlsson, Meier lead Sharks’ win

-

Melker Karlsson and Timo Meier scored in an 89second span in the third period to lift the Sharks to a 32 victory over the host Winnipeg Jets on Friday night.

Marcus Sorensen also scored for the Sharks, who are 430 in their past seven games. Aaron Dell made 30 saves for San Jose and had help from the post during a late flurry of shots by the Jets.

“Yeah, that was a nice bounce,” Dell said of a shot by Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor that hit the post with 20 seconds left in the third.

“It was kind of a bouncing puck,” Connor said of missing the open net and hitting the post.

Connor scored his teamleading 29th goal with some highlightworthy moves on the power play, and Blake Wheeler had a goal and assist for the Jets.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 shots for Winnipeg, which was playing the fourth game of a seasonlong sixgame homestand. The Jets are 431 in their past eight games.

The Sharks led 10 after the first period and the Jets held a 21 lead after two.

Sorensen’s sixth goal of the season at 14:51 of the first counted after a Winnipeg coach’s challenge was unsuccessful. Sorensen banged in a loose puck from a crowded crease, but the Jets claimed it was goaltender interference because Hellebuyck’s pad was pushed.

Meier has three goals and three assists in a fourgame point streak.

Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, playing in his 1,100th NHL game, picked up an assist on Meier’s goal. It also was Burns’ 528th consecutive game, the secondlongest active streak among defensemen behind Florida’s Keith Yandle (854).

Penguins 4, Canadiens 1: Newlyacquired Jason Zucker scored his first two goals with Pittsburgh during a win over visiting Montreal. Zucker scored his 15th and 16th of the season in a 1:42 span, with Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher getting a goal in between.

Rangers 3, Blue Jackets 1: Chris Kreider scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, Alexandar Georgiev had 36 saves and New York topped host Columbus.

Hurricanes 5, Devils 2: Andrei Svechnikov scored in the second period to push his point streak to six games and help host Carolina beat New Jersey.
