Louisville football recruit shot, killed

-

A high school football player from Florida who had signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Louisville was fatally shot late Saturday, Orlando police said.

Dexter Rentz Jr. tied a state record in 2017 when he intercepted five passes in a game while playing as a sophomore at Ocoee High School, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Police said the high school senior was among four people hit by gunfire, and the only fatality, in a crime called into authorities shortly after 11 p.m. EDT on Saturday.

Louisville’s head football coach, Scott Satterfield, lamented the death in a statement Sunday that described Rentz as “a great young man.”

Yahoo Sports reported that Teshaun Hightower, a Tulane guard who declared for the NBA draft, was arrested in a Georgia homicide this month. He faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and battery.

He and five others are charged in the killing in Stockbridge, a suburb of Atlanta.

Tulane announced it had dismissed Hightower, a junior who was the Green Wave's leading scorer last season at 15.9 points per game. Horse racing: For the first time, the Arkansas Derby will be run in two divisions. Both will carry the full 170 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

A total of 22 horses are expected to run Saturday between the two divisions, including winners of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Rebel Stakes, Tampa Bay Derby and Louisiana Derby. Basketball: Florida guards Andrew Nembhard and Tre Mann, San Diego State forward Matt Mitchell and South Carolina forward A.J. Lawson are entering the NBA draft. All four could return next season. The NBA draft combine is scheduled for May 2124.
