Police shot and killed a man who allegedly stabbed another man Sunday morning just north of San Jose’s SAP Center, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The department said it is investigating the city’s third officerinvolved shooting of the year and the second of the weekend. Another incident ended Friday night in East San Jose after an officer shot at, but did not hit, an armed person who was later arrested.

Sunday’s shooting happened just after 8 a.m. when, according to police, officers were called to an encampment near North Autumn Street and West Julian Street. Officers say they arrived to find the stabbing victim in the middle of the intersection and a man armed with a knife.

When the suspect refused to drop his knife, one officer used “a less lethal weapon with no effect,” according to the authorities. The department says body camera footage will show that the man advanced at the officers, who then fired their guns and killed him.

The stabbing victim also died, police said. The officers, who have been placed on administrative leave, were not injured.

The police did not say how many officers fired, how many shots were fired or how many times the suspect was hit.

The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office and the San Jose Police Department are conducting a joint criminal investigation. Chief Eddie Garcia is expected to address the matter Monday afternoon.
