NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Surveillance bill: Democrats pulled legislation from the House floor Thursday that would have extended FBI surveillance authorities after President Trump and Republicans turned against the legislation. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there will be a new round of negotiations with the Senate over the expired powers the FBI considers vital in fighting terrorism. A similar version had drawn broad bipartisan support in March, including from Attorney General William Barr. But that coalition crumbled as Trump threatened a veto and House Republicans who had once voted for the bill followed his lead.
2 North Dakota shooting: Dozens of first responders paraded through a North Dakota city to honor a police officer who was shot to death by a man being served with an eviction notice. According to police, Salamah Pendleton opened fire on two Grand Forks County sheriff ’s deputies and two city police officers who tried to serve the eviction papers to him Wednesday afternoon. One of the officers was killed, and a woman was found shot to death in his apartment. Pendleton, 41, was shot and wounded, as was a sheriff ’s deputy who is in stable condition.
3 Missing children: A body found in an east Tulsa creek is believed to be that of a second missing toddler who disappeared with his sister last week, according to police. Police have been searching since Friday for 2yearold Tony Crook and his 3yearold sister, Miracle Crook. Police have said the two were last seen on security video outside their east Tulsa apartment holding hands and walking toward a creek whose waters flow into the Arkansas River. The mother of the children, Donisha Willis, 24, is jailed on charges of child neglect and assaulting a police officer. The girl’s body was found in the Arkansas River, about 40 miles from the apartment.
4 Jail birth: A woman managed to go into labor and give birth alone in a Texas jail cell without any corrections officers noticing until after she had delivered the child, a sheriff ’s official said Thursday. The woman had the baby in a Fort Worth jail cell on May 17, according to Tarrant County Sheriff ’s Office spokeswoman Lt. Jennifer Gabbert. The woman “did not immediately disclose the birth, but the baby was soon discovered by a corrections officer” and both were taken to a hospital, Gabbert said. She could not immediately provide information about the health of the mother and child. Jail staff knew the woman was pregnant and had been checking on her regularly, Gabbert said, without specifying whether they knew her due date.
5 Opioid lawsuits: Five retail chains flooded two Ohio counties with tens of millions of prescription painkillers through their pharmacies while taking few if any steps to stop drugs from being illegally diverted, according to updated lawsuits unsealed in U.S. District Court in Cleveland. The counties are Lake and Trumbull in northeast Ohio. Their lawsuits made public this week allege CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Walmart and Giant Eagle helped fuel a national drug crisis that resulted in more than 430,000 deaths since 2000. A trial is set for May 2021
