Cal announcer Grosscup, 83, dies

Lee Grosscup, who spent more than three decades as part of Cal's football broadcast team, died Monday. Grosscup, who had been recuperati­ng from hip surgery, was 83.

Grosscup joined Joe Starkey in the Cal radio booth as an analyst in 1986. Grosscup moved to the postgame show in 2004. He officially retired after the 2018 season but contribute­d to the broadcasts last season.

A quarterbac­k at the University of Utah who became known for his use of the shovel pass, Grosscup was a firstround pick of the New York Giants in 1959. He later spent two decades calling college games for ABC, working with Keith Jackson and Al Michaels, among others. College basketball: The WCC announced conference matchups for the 202021 men’s season. With a 16game schedule, each team misses one team at home and one on the road. St. Mary’s will not host San Diego and will not play at Portland. USF won’t host Pacific and won’t go to San Diego. Santa Clara won’t host BYU and won’t play at Pepperdine.

— Steve Kroner Colleges: The Mountain West is eliminatin­g postseason tournament­s in baseball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s soccer and shortening other postseason events. At the end of the conference’s virtual spring meetings, the Mountain West announced several costcuttin­g measures, including an 18% reduction in operating budget.

Motor sports: Noah Gragson squeezed past JR Motorsport­s teammate Justin Allgaier with four laps remaining, a move that caused Allgaier to crash, and held on at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway for his second Xfinity Series win of the season. Gragson also won the seasonopen­ing race at Daytona to begin his second year with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s race team. Gragson was winless in 2019 in his first full season in the NASCAR series.
