California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man and shot a woman late Saturday night in Oakland, according to authorities.

The Oakland Police Department said CHP officers were conducting a “criminal investigation” on the 9600 block of Cherry Street at 10:46 p.m. when the man and woman were shot inside a vehicle.

Details of what prompted the investigation and shootings have not been released.

A review of Oakland police dispatcher audio by The Chronicle provided a glimpse into how police were initially describing the incident. A dispatcher alerted incoming units, saying a CHP unit was trying to conduct a stop on a vehicle when “the occupants started shooting at a CHP officer.”

KTVU reporter Henry Lee tweeted Sunday morning that three CHP investigators fired into a 2018 Dodge Challenger and that the car was among more than 70 stolen from a San Leandro dealership last week. Oakland police did not respond to repeated attempts to confirm.

The shootings come amid increasing unrest after last month’s police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis set off nationwide protests over police brutality and systemic racism.

The male driver died, and the female passenger was in stable condition Sunday morning at a local hospital after being treated for gunshot wounds, according to police. No injuries to CHP officers were reported.

It was the 10th deadly shooting by law enforcement in the Bay Area since April 12, Oak

land police said.

The Oakland Police Department, Alameda County district attorney’s office and the CHP are each conducting independent investigations.
