Eiffel Tower reopens to visitors on June 25

-

Workers are preparing the Eiffel Tower for reopening next week, after the coronavirus pandemic led to the iconic Paris landmark’s longest closure since World War II.

France’s tourism industry is opening back up, but the 1,063feet tall wroughtiron tower won’t immediately welcome visitors the way it did before the country went into lockdown in March.

Only limited numbers of people will be allowed in when the Eiffel Tower opens again on June 25. Elevators to the top will be out of service, and only the first and second floors will be accessible to the public.

Everyone over 11 years old will be required to wear face masks, and crowd control measures will be in place.

U.S. border to remain closed

Canada and the U.S. have agreed to extend their agreement to keep their border closed to nonessential travel to July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday’s agreement extends the closure by another 30 days. The restrictions were announced on March 18 and were extended in April and May. Many Canadians fear a reopening. Americans who are returning to the U.S. and Canadians who are returning to Canada are exempted from the border closure.

Vaccine trial begins

Scientists at Imperial College London will start immunizing people in Britain this week with their experimental coronavirus shot, while pharmaceutical company Sanofi and the French government announced more than $890 million in investment Tuesday as part of the worldwide race to find an effective vaccine. The British government said 300 healthy people will be immunized with two doses of the COVID19 vaccine candidate developed at Imperial.

Flights in and out canceled

Chinese media say more than 60% of commercial flights in and out of Beijing have been canceled as the city raises the alert level amid a new coronavirus outbreak. Beijing has enacted a number of measures to limit travel in and out of the city, especially among those coming from districts where new cases have been detected. Beijing had essentially eradicated cases of local transmission but in recent days has added a total of 137 new cases with no new deaths.

Nation loosens restrictions

After nearly three months of mandatory stayathome orders to slow the spread of COVID19 in El Salvador, the most locked down country in Latin America slowly began opening Tuesday.
