Death toll surpasses 500,000 worldwide

Another tragic milestone was passed Sunday in the coronavirus pandemic: 500,000 deaths around the globe, according to the count maintained by Johns Hopkins University researchers.

About 1 in 4 of those deaths — more than 125,000 — has been reported in the U.S. The true death toll from the virus, which first emerged in China late last year, is widely believed to be significantly higher.

To date, more than 10 million confirmed cases have been reported globally.

While Hopkins reports only confirmed coronavirus cases, experts believe the actual number of people who have been infected could be as much as 10 times that figure, given that so many people cannot get tested or may have the virus without showing any symptoms.
