Newton to join Pats on oneyear deal

The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with freeagent quarterbac­k Cam Newton, bringing in the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player to help the team move on from threetime MVP Tom Brady, a person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press.

The oneyear deal is worth up to $7.5 million with incentives, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The signing was first reported by ESPN.

The Patriots add Newton, 31, to a quarterbac­k group that consisted of 2019 fourthroun­d draft choice Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer, 34, as candidates to replace Brady, who led the team to six Super Bowl championsh­ips since 2001 but signed with Tampa Bay.

The Patriots were fined $1.1 million by the NFL for inappropri­ately filming the Cincinnati Bengals’ sideline during a game last season. Sunday, the league also took away a thirdround pick in the 2021 draft. Also, the team’s production crew will not be allowed to shoot any games in the 2020 season. ESPN first reported the penalties.

Baseball: Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Edgar Santana will miss all of the abbreviate­d 2020 season after being suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. MLB said Santana tested positive for Boldenone, a performanc­eenhancing substance.

Soccer: The two most successful teams in the FA Cup have avoided each other in the semifinals. Arsenal, a 13time champion, will play Manchester City, and 12time winner Manchester United faces Chelsea. The matches be at London’s Wembley Stadium over the July 1819 weekend.

On Sunday, Chelsea advanced to the last four with a 10 win at Leicester, Arsenal beat Sheffield United 21 and Cup holder Man City defeated Newcastle 20.
