Giants signings:
Second-round pick Casey Schmitt of San Diego State among three draftees who signed Thursday.
A day after the Giants signed their firstround draft pick, they wrapped up a deal with their secondrounder.
Casey Schmitt of San Diego State was among three Giants draftees who signed Thursday, the team said. Schmitt was a twoway player in college — a third baseman and relief pitcher — but the Giants initially plan to use him on the offensive side.
Schmitt was drafted 49th overall. The two others to sign were Dallas Baptist University shortstop Jimmy Glowenke, a compensation pick who was selected 68th overall, and fifthrounder (144th overall) Ryan Murphy, a pitcher from Le Moyne College.
Wednesday, the Giants announced the signing of top pick Patrick Bailey, a catcher from North Carolina State, for a reported $3.8 million.
The Giants drafted seven players and must stay within their $9.2 million pool. They had agreed to terms with their thirdround pick, pitcher
Kyle Harrison of De La Salle High in Concord, for $2.5 million but haven’t announced the deal. The projected slot value of the Harrison pick (85th) was $710,000, but the pot needed to be sweetened because of the lefty’s scholarship offer from UCLA.
Schmitt hit .323 with six saves in 16 games before the conronavirus pandemic shut down the NCAA season. In his twoplus seasons as an Aztec, he hit .295 with six homers, a .366 onbase percentage and .408 slugging percentage.
As a pitcher, Schmitt had a a 2.48 ERA and 23 saves, striking out 78 batters in 87 innings. His freshman ERA was 0.28 in 32 innings.
The Giants had two compensation picks for losing Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith to free agency and used the 67th pick, which they got for Bumgarner, on Glowenke.
