NHL deal paves way to resume season

The National Hockey League and NHL Players’ Associatio­n announced a tentative agreement to return to play this season and extend the collective bargaining agreement.

The fouryear extension of the CBA, coupled with the agreement on protocols for training camps and games, paves the way for hockey to resume this summer. Training camps would open Monday and games would resume Aug. 1 if approved by the league’s board of governors and players’ union membership.

Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, were selected as the NHL’s hub cities to host the qualifying round and at least first two playoff rounds of the 24team playoff format, a source said.

MLB: Atlanta outfielder Nick Markakis has opted out of the 2020 season. Markakis, 36, said he was uneasy about playing the season without fans.

Among players testing positive for the coronaviru­s were Texas outfielder Joey Gallo, Arizona outfielder Kole Calhoun and Milwaukee shortstop Luis Urias and pitcher Angel Perdomo. All are asymptomat­ic.

Soccer: FC Dallas pulled out of the MLS is Back tournament in Orlando after 10 players tested positive for coronaviru­s.

MLS MVP Carlos Vela will not join Los Angeles FC in Orlando, citing his family’s health.

WNBA: The league announced that seven of the 137 players (about 5%) had coronaviru­s positive results from its first round of testing. The season is expected to begin this month and continue until October.

Television: Former 49ers quarterbac­k Colin Kaepernick and the Walt Disney Co. announced a production deal that will see him produce “scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity” for the media giant’s platforms, including ESPN.
