Awaiting virus results, Giants cut 2 workouts
The bizarre and chaotic coronavirus testing process that has forced teams throughout baseball to reschedule or cancel workouts reached the shores of McCovey Cove.
Late Tuesday morning, the Giants announced they were canceling the day’s two workouts because they had not received the result of tests administered Saturday. They hope to resume training Wednesday.
Manager Gabe Kapler cited the “logistical” snafu of tests not being delivered to Major League Baseball’s lone contract laboratory in Salt Lake City over a holiday weekend, an embarrassing development for a league that is trying to gain the trust of players and fans that a 2020 season can begin safely July 23.
Kapler said Major League Baseball promised that Saturday’s test results would be delivered Tuesday afternoon. Though some teams, such as the A’s, pushed workouts back to evening hours as they awaited test results, the Giants decided to give their players and coach
The Giants said they have signed their fourth-round draft pick, Arizona State right-hander R.J. Dabovich.
Taken with the 114th overall pick, Dabovich is the sixth of the Giants’ seven draftees to sign, leaving one big contract to finish.
That is for De La Salle High left-hander Kyle Harrison, who reportedly agreed to a $2.5 million signing bonus, more than three times the recommend slot for the 85th pick.
Sources both inside and outside the organization told The Chronicle late last week that the Harrison deal was on track, without any snags that might push him toward his UCLA scholarship offer.
