Pence undergoes MRI on ailing foot
Giants outfielder Hunter Pence underwent an MRI on his right foot Friday. Results showed inflammation but nothing serious.
He has had pain on the bottom of the foot where it meets the toes, forcing him to limit his workouts since the start of summer camp at Oracle Park.
“It’s very precautionary,” said Pence, who hit in practice Friday but didn’t run or play the field. He won’t run at least until Monday.
“It’s very mild. We’re trying to get it so that I’m going to be 100 percent when we get going so I don’t go backward.”
Pence also addressed the major news of the day, saying he was “extraordinarily proud” of Buster Posey for opting out of the 2020 season to ensure the health and safety of the newborn twins that he and his wife Kristen adopted.
“These are two lives that are highrisk,” Pence said. “That’s just a tough weight to put on your soul to come play baseball and risk their lives. It’s a tough weight on everybody’s soul.”
In his first group interview since camp began, Pence said he is taking the health and safety precautions seriously, saying that all 30 teams are really one team dedicated to staying healthy because a handful of players cold jeopardize the season for everybody.
He is wearing a mask whenever he can and abiding by the suggestion that players not take unneeded risks, even in the clubhouse’s most inner sanctum, the bathroom.
“I haven’t been showering at the field, which is gross,” he said. “I’m going as extreme as I can because I realize the opportunity to have a season depends on all of us doing the right things. I want to be a message of what is right. I feel like we owe it to each other to give ourselves the best chance to stay healthy, in baseball, as a country.”
