For the first time since 1996, Stanford won’t play Notre Dame in football. The Pac12 announced Friday that football and other fall sports will only play conference games due to concerns over the coronavirus.

Stanford was scheduled to travel to face the Fighting Irish on Oct. 10. That’s canceled, as are home games against William & Mary to open the season and BYU to end it. Cal’s nonconference slate had earlyseason home games against UNLV and Cal Poly sandwiched around a trip to TCU.

The conference said it will delay the start of mandatory sports activities “until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of returntoplay activities.”

Leaders from the conference’s schools met Friday and made the decision, which also affects men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

Athletes who opt out due to coronavirus concerns will have their scholarships honored “and will remain in good standing with their team,” according to the release by the conference.

The conferenceonly schedules will be announced no later than July 31, the Pac12 said.

The conference also said that commissioner Larry Scott tested positive for the virus and has selfquarantined.
