NASCAR rookie wins scramble in Kentucky

Cole Custer became the first rookie winner in the NASCAR Cup Series in nearly four years, surging to the lead in a fourwide, finallap scramble Sunday at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. were dueling side by side for the lead on the final restart when Custer — with a push from Matt DiBenedett­o on the outside in the backstretc­h — made his move in the No. 41 StewartHaa­s Racing Ford. As the leaders bunched in Turn 1, Custer slid ahead and outlasted Truex’s Toyota.

Felix Rosenqvist overtook Pato O’Ward on the nexttolast lap and earned his first career win in the second half of an IndyCar doublehead­er at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Lewis Hamilton won the Styrian Grand Prix from the pole position in Spielberg, Austria, to clinch an 85th career win and move six behind Michael Schumacher’s Formula One record.

Billy Torrence won in the NHRA’s return, beating Doug Kalitta in Top Fuel in the NHRA Nationals in Indianapol­is. Matt Hagan won in Funny Car, Jason Line in Pro Stock and Ryan Oehler in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Redskins nickname will be ‘retired’

Washington’s NFL team will get rid of the name “Redskins” on Monday, according to reports.

It’s unclear when a new name will be revealed for one of the league’s oldest franchises.

USA Today, ESPN, Washington Post, Washington Times and Sports Business Journal reported that owner Dan Snyder is set to “retire” the name. Yahoo, on Saturday, reported a name change was imminent.

The team launched a “thorough review” of the name July 3 that the NFL supported. That came in the aftermath of prominent sponsors FedEx, Nike, PepsiCo and Bank of America asking the team to change the name.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers guard Rajon Rondo suffered a “significan­t” hand injury during practice Sunday, ESPN reported. The team is scheduled to resume its season in Florida on Thursday.

Soccer: The Toronto FCD.C. United MLS match was postponed because of an unconfirme­d positive test and an inconclusi­ve test for the coronaviru­s. Both players tested negative later Sunday and MLS reschedule­d the match for Monday.

Kevin Molino scored in the seventh minute of secondhalf stoppage time as Minnesota United beat Sporting Kansas City 21 in the MLS is Back event in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

In Lake Buena Vista, Albert Rusnak and Damir Kreilach scored as Real Salt Lake defeated Colorado 20.

Bayley Feist scored early and the Washington Spirit held off the Houston Dash for a 10 win in Herriman, Utah, in the National Women’s Soccer League’s Challenge Cup. In the late game, Casey Short scored in the 85th minute as Chicago beat Utah 10.
