SEC says no football unless virus wanes

SEC athletic directors met in person Monday at league headquarte­rs in Birmingham, Ala., to discuss the prospects for a football season with the coronaviru­s spiking in much of the South.

SEC Commission­er Greg Sankey said in a statement afterward that it’s “clear that current circumstan­ces related to COVID19 must improve.”

Sankey said SEC leaders “believe that late July will provide the best clarity for making the important decisions ahead.”

The Patriot League joined the Ivy League in canceling fall sports, including football, because of the pandemic.

Man City overturns UEFA finance ban

Manchester City successful­ly overturned its twoyear ban from the Champions League in a surprising legal victory.

The Court of Arbitratio­n for

Sport upheld City’s appeal against the UEFA ban, but imposed an $11.3 million fine on the club for failing to cooperate with independen­t investigat­ors.

Some UEFA allegation­s accusing City of finance rules violations dating back years were unproven and others were “timebarred,” the court said.

The decision by the three CAS judges clears the team to play in the group stage of the Champions League next season.

In the MLS Is Back tourney in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Federico Higuain and Frederic Brillant scored late in the second half as D.C. United drew 22 against Toronto FC . ... Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez scored midway through the second half, and Los Angeles FC rallied to draw 33 with the Houston Dynamo . ...

The 10man Portland Timbers hung on to beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 21. The Galaxy, which had a goal overturned on video review in the 81st minute, got a later goal from Chicharito, who had missed an early penalty kick.

The Portland Thorns will face topseeded North Carolina in the quarterfin­als of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Challenge Cup in Herriman, Utah, after ending the group stage with a 00 draw with the rival OL Reign . ... Samantha Mewis and Crystal Dunn scored as the twotime defending champion North Carolina Courage stayed perfect in the event with a 20 win over Sky Blue FC.

Manchester United gave up a goal late in stoppage time to draw with Southampto­n 22 in the English Premier League.

NHL: As the 24 playoff teams began training camps, the Minnesota Wild formalized Dean Evason’s status as head coach.

Golf: The rest of the PGA Tour season won’t have spectators after the organizers of four tournament­s announced that they would close events to the public.

WNBA: The season is set to tip off July 25 with all 12 teams playing that weekend. All games will be played in Bradenton, Fla.

Washington Mystics center and MVP Elena Delle Donne said her request to be medically excused from play because of Lyme disease was denied.

College basketball: Anthony Roy (Dublin) signed a letter of intent to join the USF men’s team. The 6foot5 guard averaged 17.8 points last season.
