Earthquake­s’ late rally produces win in tourney

Shea Salinas scored in the eighth minute of secondhalf stoppage time as the Earthquake­s completed a comeback from a twogoal deficit with a 43 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday in the MLS is Back tournament near Orlando.

San Jose (101) trailed 31 until Chris Wondolowsk­i scored on a header in the 72nd minute, then tied it on Oswaldo Alanis’ header off a corner kick less than 10 minutes later. Vancouver is 010.

The Quakes are scheduled to face Chicago in the event Sunday.

Motor sports: Chase Elliott joined his father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, as a winner of NASCAR’s annual AllStar race, earning the $1 million prize in front of limited spectators at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Elliott won the second and third stages of the event and earned the right to choose which lane he wanted to restart for the final 15lap sprint to the finish. He picked the outside lane and pulled buddy Ryan Blaney with him on the restart but was not challenged and beat Kyle Busch to the finish line.

Tennessee officials allowed NASCAR and Speedway Motorsport­s to sell 30,000 tickets to the race. The official attendance was not revealed, but estimates placed it about 20,000.

Bubba Wallace was wrecked out of the qualifying race, ruining his shot of racing for the $1 million prize.

Golf: This year’s Safeway Open will be held without spectators because of the COVID19 pandemic, tournament officials announced. The event, scheduled to lead off the PGA Tour’s 202021 season, will be played Sept. 1013 at Silverado Resort in Napa.

NFL: The Tennessee Titans have agreed on a “multiyear extension” with NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry. It’s a fouryear deal for $50 million with $25.5 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.com.

QB Dak Prescott will play this season under the oneyear franchise tag after he and the Dallas Cowboys and couldn’t agree on a longterm contract.

The Cleveland Browns completed a deal with Myles Garrett on a fiveyear, $125 million contract extension, making the edge rusher the NFL’s highestpai­d defensive player.

Obituary: Dave Lewis, a Pro Bowl linebacker who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams in an NFL career that ran from 1977 through ’83, died Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. He was 65.

Baseball: Texas Rangers left fielder Willie Calhoun, a Benicia High alum, is expected to miss the start of the season because of a hip strain . ... The Boston Red Sox placed lefthander­s Eduardo Rodriguez, Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez on the injured list while they recover from the coronaviru­s.
