The longanticipated live album and concert film documenting Metallica’s second collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony is set for release on Aug. 28, a few days shy of the first anniversary of the run of shows heralding the opening of Chase Center.

“Metallica and San Francisco Symphony: S&M2,” which was recorded on Sept. 6 and 8 at the new home of the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, will be available in a variety of formats: on four vinyl LPs, two CDs, DVD or BluRay, and in a limitededition Deluxe Box, as well as by digital download and streaming services.

A Super Deluxe Box, limited to 500 copies, will feature sheet music used by the Symphony during the shows, handsigned by the four members of Metallica — singerguitarist James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich.

The concerts at Chase

Center, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Bay Area metal group’s first collaboration with the orchestra in 1999, drew 16,000 fans each night, some who paid upward of $9,000 a ticket on the secondary market.

The threehour performances showcased the interplay between Metallica’s thundering riffs and the nearly 80piece Symphony’s sweeping strings on brooding songs like “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Memory Remains.” The band was also joined by nowretired Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and conductor Edwin Outwater.

The live album was produced by Greg Fidelman, Hetfield and Ulrich. The concert film features a new edit by Joe Hutching of the theatrical version that was released in October and played in more than 3,700 cinemas worldwide.
