Andrew Triggs’ stay on the Giants’ active roster was brief. A day after he walked the bases loaded in his first major league game since 2018, the Giants optioned him to the alternative camp and recalled lefthander Andrew Suarez in time for Monday night’s game in Denver.

Triggs won’t stray too far. He is replacing Suarez on the threeman taxi squad each team is allowed to carry on the road. Dereck Rodriguez is the other pitcher, and Chris Herrmann the catcher.

Suarez’s versatility could be helpful during a fourgame series in Denver.

“He can give us bulk,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “He has a history as a starter. He has fairly pronounced splits and has had quite a bit of success against lefthanded hitters. The Rockies have plenty of those, and he’s been doing some good work in Sacramento.

“I had an unsolicited report on the work that he’s been doing this morning.”

Giants will need a starter to replace injured Drew Smyly in the series. Kapler said that likely will not be Rodriguez, even though the righthander has a 1.88 ERA in three games there.

Pence a fan of “fans”: Hunter Pence has become a Kapler fan for obvious reasons. The new manager kept playing Pence, even batting him cleanup, when he was hitless in 23 atbats. That streak ended with a secondinning triple Sunday.

“He’s been outstanding, giving me all of the opportunities here,” Pence said. “That’s not always the case for every player. I realize how amazing it is, and I appreciate it.”

Pence also appreciated the 4,712 cardboard people in the stands Sunday, which the club says will grow by at least 4,000 before the next homestand.

“For whatever reasons, just knowing the fans are excited to see themselves if a foul ball goes that way or whatever, you feel kind of the spirit of the people,” Pence said. “When it was just empty seats in summer camp, it was very awkward.”

At Sacramento: Outfielder Heliot Ramos, who was sidelined during summer camp with an infected leg, is a full participant at the Sacramento alternate camp. Kapler, who gets daily reports from farm director Kyle Haines, said Ramos is improving his plate discipline. Haines also singled out infielder Will Wilson for hitting well to all fields. … The Giants used 15 relievers in the first 10 games, matching Pittsburgh for most in the majors. Their 11 errors matched the Rays for second in the majors behind the Royals’ 14.
