NEWS OF THE DAY

From Across the Nation

1 Portland protests: A riot was declared in Oregon’s largest city as protesters demonstrated outside a law enforcement building early Sunday, continuing a nightly ritual in Portland. Officers used crowd control munitions to disperse the gathering outside the Penumbra Kelly building. The actions came after what started as a peaceful protest. Demonstrations, often violent, have happened nightly in Portland for more than two months after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Participants have repeatedly broken into the offices of the Portland Police Association, vandalized them and set fires.

2 Cincinnati shootings: At least 18 people were shot — four fatally — as gunfire erupted in several places around Cincinnati overnight, authorities said Sunday. News outlets reported the shootings took place within 60 to 90 minutes of each other. Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate said they “seem to be separate, independent incidents but horrific and tragic.” No suspect information was immediately available in any of the cases. “I am calling on all citizens of this great city to say enough is enough,” said Police Chief Eliot Isaac.

3 Chicago clashes: A day of largely peaceful protests against racial injustice and police brutality ended in violent skirmishes between demonstrators and police in downtown Chicago, with two dozen arrests and many injuries. Police Superintendent David Brown said a march began peacefully Saturday, but a separate demonstration broke off resulting in two dozen arrests, 17 injured police officers and at least two injured protesters. None of the injuries was believed to be life threatening. Activist groups and some elected officials called out police for using aggressive tactics. But Mayor Lori Lightfoot praised police Sunday for “fairly quickly” dispersing the protests.

4 Officers wounded: Three police officers were shot Sunday by a gunman who remained barricaded inside a home located in a suburb of Austin, Texas, authorities said. The Cedar Park Police Department said on Twitter that officers were responding to a call at a home when the three were shot. The officers were in stable condition at a hospital, while one person was barricaded inside the home. “We must never take for granted the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, and the State of Texas stands ready to provide the support and resources needed to bring justice to those involved,” Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. The city of Cedar Park asked residents to avoid the scene.

5 Ponzi scheme: The younger brother of Ponzi king Bernard Madoff has been released from home confinement, the Bureau of Prisons said. Peter Madoff, who had served about nine years of his sentence, was released Thursday, said Justin Long, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Prisons. He had been transferred to home confinement from a federal prison in Miami in November 2019, officials said. Peter Madoff, 74, had pleaded guilty to falsifying documents and lying to regulators as part of his brother’s Ponzi scheme and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
