Reed being eased back into action by Shanahan

Jordan Reed officially joined the 49ers on Aug. 9.

But the former Pro Bowl tight end with an extensive injury history probably won’t be joining full trainingcamp practices until next week.

On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Reed, 30, who hasn’t played in a regularseason game since Dec. 9, 2018, would be eased back into action slowly.

Shanahan was Reed’s offensive coordinator when they were in Washington during Reed’s rookie season in 2013. Reed has suffered seven documented concussions dating to his freshman year at Florida in 2010. Reed has missed 47 of 112 regularseason games in his career, also missing time with toe, hamstring, chest, shoulder and quadriceps injuries.

“I know his history pretty well,” Shanahan said. “I think everyone does. We’re just trying to be smart with him. That’s kind of a daybyday thing. I suspect him to more come into play (practicing) next week.”

On Saturday, the first practice of camp, Reed took part in individual drills before retreating to a side field where he caught passes during team work. He was not observed at practice Sunday or Monday.

“We’re conditioning him. getting him ready to go out there and compete,” Shanahan said. “We’re keeping him up on the offense. And when he gets his opportunity, we’ll make sure he’s ready.”

Reed was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2016, a season in which he had 66 catches for 686 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. Not much from Moseley: Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was asked how he handled the criticism and scrutiny he received from the play that sparked the Chiefs’ fourthquarter comeback in Super Bowl LIV: Patrick Mahomes’ 44yard completion to wide receiver Tyreke Hill on 3rdand15 that involved a coverage gaffe by Moseley.

“I just learned from it,” Moseley said. “Moved on. And focus on this year.”

Moseley, who is the favorite to start at right cornerback, was more expansive when asked how he handled the emotions of losing in the Super Bowl.

“I definitely thought about it,” Moseley said. “I watched film after the game. I just use it as a learning (experience) and I just move on to the next season. I took it as my motivation while I was training. Just worked on my eye mechanics.” Injury report: Cornerback K’Waun Williams, who missed his second straight practice, had an MRI that revealed a Grade 1 calf strain, a source said. The injury shouldn’t threaten Williams’ availability for the season opener against Arizona on Sept. 13 . ... Shanahan said defensive tackle Arik Armstead (back) could make his trainingcamp debut Wednesday.
