The Giants are giving Chris Shaw another opportunity, and the powerhitting outfielder is doing what he can to honor the team’s wishes. Shaw and reliever Melvin Adon were added to the 60man player pool Friday to train at the Giants’ alternate site in Sacramento.

The 31st overall pick in the 2015 draft, Shaw, 26, was a notable omission when the Giants announced their pool in late June, and manager

Gabe Kapler said Shaw was asked to work on his overall athleticism.

“One of things we challenged him with was being as agile as possible because obviously this game is multidimensional,” Kapler said. “Him being a big, powerful, lefthandhitting bat is not enough. You’ve got to be able to contribute in many different ways.

“So he took that challenge head on, and I’m assured he’s gotten more agile and athletic, and we want to see it in person.”

Friday’s announcement came three days before the trade deadline, and only players in player pools are eligible to be traded. It’s now possible Shaw could be included in a trade.

Shaw was limited to 18 bigleague atbats in 2019 and 54 in 2018, hitting .153. Last season in DoubleA and TripleA, he hit a combined .294 with 28 homers

Briefly: Outfielder Austin Slater (groin strain) remained in San Francisco and will “continue to build up his baseball activity over the next week,” the Giants said, a sign he wouldn’t be ready to be activated from the injured list when eligible Monday . ...

Drew Smyly (finger sprain) will throw his third bullpen session this weekend while

Jeff Samardzija (shoulder inflammation) will throw his second . ... Reyes Moronta, rehabbing from shoulder surgery, could still pitch for the Giants in September. He has thrown off a mound several times and could pitch to hitters next week.
