Padres top Dodgers to tighten NL West

Dinelson Lamet outpitched Clayton Kershaw, and rookie Jorge Ona hit a goahead double in a fiverun seventh inning to lead the San Diego Padres to their eighth straight win, 72 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park on Monday night in the opener of a series between the NL’s top two teams.

Lamet (31) got the victory thanks to a seventhinn­ing outburst that chased Kershaw (52). Lamet matched his season strikeout high with 11 while holding the Dodgers to one run and three hits. He walked only two.

Kershaw allowed three runs and five hits in 61⁄3 innings. He struck out nine and walked none.

Marlins 6, Phillies 2: Pablo Lopez allowed one run in seven innings to help Miami win the finale of their marathon sevengame series against visiting Philadelph­ia. The series, the majors’ longest in the regular season in 53 years, included three makeup games and two doublehead­ers.

Orioles 14, Braves 1: DJ Stewart hit the first of three Baltimore homers in a ninerun third inning, and the host Orioles pounded Atlanta to end a fivegame losing streak.

White Sox 3, Twins 1: Adam Engel delivered a tiebreakin­g pinchhit single in the eighth inning, and Chicago beat visiting Minnesota to increase their lead in the AL Central.

Cardinals, Brewers split: Paul DeJong knocked in the goahead run with a twoout single in the ninth to help St. Louis edged host Milwaukee to salvage a split of their doublehead­er. In the opener, Keston Hiura hit a sacrifice fly to score Avisail Garcia with the winning run as the Brewers came from behind to win 21.

Reds, Pirates split: Mike Moustakas hit a threerun homer in the fifth inning, and host Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 94 for a doublehead­er sweep. In the opener, rookie Tyler Stephenson hit a tiebreakin­g tworun homer in the seventh inning, lifting the Reds to a 31 win.

Sandoval to Braves? MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported that the Braves signed Pablo Sandoval to a minorleagu­e contract and that he will report to the team’s alternativ­e site.
