Yankees trounce Jays, pass them in AL East

Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks homered to key a sevenrun secondinni­ng burst made possible when right fielder Derek Fisher misplayed two flyballs, and the Yankees rocketed past Toronto into second place in the AL East with a 206 blowout in New York on Tuesday night that extended their winning streak to six.

Voit homered twice, raising his majorleagu­eleading total to 18, and had five RBIs for the Yankees, who have rebounded after a 515 slump. New York (2721) and Toronto (2621) started a stretch of seven games against each other in the season’s final two weeks.

“A couple of weeks ago,

I don’t think teams were scared of us. And now we’re back to being the Bronx Bombers,” Voit said. “I don’t think people want to play us in the playoffs.”

DJ LeMahieu had four hits and five RBIs, raising his average 13 points to .363.

Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela returned from the injured list for the Yankees, who expect to get back Aaron Judge shortly. Stanton was 0for4 with a walk as the designated hitter. Dodgers 3, Padres 1: Rookie Tony Gonsolin (St. Mary’s) threw seven strong innings for visiting Los Angeles, and Kenley Jansen escaped a basesloade­d jam in the ninth inning with two strikeouts. Diamondbac­ks 9, Angels 8: Visiting Arizona blew an 8-1 lead as Madison Bumgarner continues to struggle (8.53 ERA), but David Peralta hit a solo home run in the eighth. Reds 4, Pirates 1: Tucker Barnhart hit a home run and Brian Goodwin prevented one with a leaping catch as host Cincinnati’s winning streak hit a season-high four games. Rays 6, Nationals 1: Ryan Yarbrough ended his 16-game winless streak and Nate Lowe homered for host Tampa Bay. Phillies 4, Mets 1: Jake Arrieta pitched effectivel­y into the sixth inning before leaving with an injury, and Didi Gregorius hit a two-run homer for host Philadelph­ia. Tigers 6, Royals 0: Miguel Cabrera hit a homer and a double for host Detroit. Braves 5, Orioles 1: Adam Duvall tied a record for visiting Atlanta with his 10th home run in September. Brewers 18, Cardinals 3: Christian Yelich broke out of his slump with a home run and three hits, Ryan Braun also went deep and host Milwaukee romped. Keston Hiura and Daniel Vogelbach also homered for the Brewers. White Sox 6, Twins 2: Dane Dunning pitched seven effective innings, Luis Robert had a key two-run single and host Chicago strengthen­ed its hold on the AL Central. Cubs 6, Indians 5: Willson Contreras and Cameron Maybin were plunked by consecutiv­e pitches from Cleveland reliever Nick Wittgren in the ninth inning, forcing home the winning run for host Chicago. Red Sox 2, Marlins 0: Tanner Houck gave up two hits in five innings to win his big-league debut for visiting Boston. Mets’ deal: Billionair­e hedgefund manager Steve Cohen has agreed to buy the Mets from the Wilpon and Katz families. The deal values the franchise at about $2.5 billion.
