Philadelphia tumbled out of a playoff position, getting swept in a doubleheader in Washington on Tuesday when Yadiel Hernandez hit a gameending, tworun homer in the eighth inning off Brandon Workman for an 87 win in the second game.
Hernandez, 32, became the oldest player to hit a walkoff homer for his first bigleague home run, according to Stats LLC.
Austin Voth (15) pitched a threehitter to win the opener 51, his first complete game in 20 bigleague starts and his first victory in 10 starts this season.
Philadelphia (2729) lost its fourth game in a row and dropped behind Cincinnati (2828), Milwaukee (2727) and the Giants (2727) for the National League’s eighth and final playoff berth.
“We’ve dug ourselves a hole and we’ve done that before and we’ve been able to fight out of it,” Philadelphia manager Joe Girardi said. “Now we have to win games and rely on” other teams.
