Bad game? Williams says wait, not so fast

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said left tackle Trent Williams “didn’t have one of his best games” after the 49ers’ 2520 loss to the Eagles on Sunday night.

On Monday, after reviewing the game, Shanahan said Williams had been a “little bit off” but would get it “corrected.”

On Thursday, the seventime Pro Bowler was asked about his uncharacteristic performance — and politely pushed back on the idea that he didn’t play well.

“It depends on what you mean,” Williams said. “If you’re talking about pass ( protection), I was credited ( with allowing) half a sack from the coaches, and I feel like I could have done that play a little better. But the quarterback got to moving around and things happen.”

In the first quarter, defensive end Derek Barnett bullrushed Williams into quarterback Nick Mullens and shared a sack.

Williams also appeared to allow a sack in the fourth quarter, when he shoved defensive end Josh Sweat to the side and stopped blocking him, allowing Sweat to drop Mullens for a 12yard loss. Williams evidently expected Mullens to drop back to a different spot.

Williams also was called for two penalties — holding and false start — and missed a block on Barnett in the first quarter, when running back Jerick McKinnon was dropped for a 5yard loss.

“Out of ( 73) plays, I probably have four to five I wish I had back,” Williams said. “Obviously, the penalties, they’re on me. Bonehead penalties. Got to erase those from the game. But other than that, from a passprotection ( standpoint), I had a pretty clean sheet.

“I know sometimes the public perception can think some things are on you when inhouse, you kind of know they’re not. That’s a tough deal to kind of juggle with dealing with perception versus reality.”

Injury report: Emmanuel Moseley ( concussion) and Dontae Johnson ( groin) remained out of practice, and Ahkello Witherspoon ( hamstring) was limited for the second straight day. If all three cornerbacks can’t play Sunday against Miami, the 49ers likely would start Ken Webster and Jason Verrett, who started the past two games.

The 49ers signed Webster off the Dolphins’ practice squad Sept. 16. The 2019 seventhround pick of the Patriots has played 11 snaps in three games with the 49ers.

Running back Raheem Mostert ( knee) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw ( quadricep) remained limited.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel did not practice because of an illness.

Free safety Jimmie Ward ( wrist) was a full participant after missing Wednesday’s practice.
